The term shin splints is often used on a general basis to refer to any pain that a person is suffering from at the front of the lower leg. This can occur due to several reasons, the most common being inflammation of the periostium of the tibia. A person suffering from shin splints will show following symptoms – pain in the lower part of the leg along with some swelling and redness in the area, formation of lumps on the inside of the shin bone and soreness on bending the toes or foot downwards.
Fortunately, one can treat shin splints quite effectively by taking oral medication for the purpose of reducing pain and inflammation and taking some rest to let the injury heal on its own. Cold compress has also been found useful in early stages of shin splints. Apart from that, you can line your shoes with shock absorbing insoles to get some relief.
